Setup
macOS says Capipaste can't be opened. Is it safe?
That's macOS being careful with an app downloaded outside the App Store; Capipaste isn't notarized by Apple yet. The source is public on GitHub. To open it once:
- Open Capipaste from Applications and click Done on the warning.
- Go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down.
- Click Open Anyway next to Capipaste, then confirm with your password or Touch ID.
curl -fsSL https://capipaste.com/install.sh | shWhat do I need?
An Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) on macOS 26. Intel Macs and older macOS versions aren't supported. Building from source also needs Xcode and XcodeGen.
Is there a Windows or Linux version?
Yes, as an early preview: a Windows installer, a Linux AppImage and a .deb. It's a separate app written in Rust (source) and it only does the core loop so far: Ctrl⇧S, drag over a region, mark it up, copy. Voice notes, screen reading and tidying are Mac-only for now. Neither build is signed, so Windows shows a SmartScreen warning — click "More info", then "Run anyway". On Linux, X11 works; Wayland blocks the global shortcut and direct screen grabs.
Can I change the shortcut?
Yes. Settings › General lets you record your own shortcuts for capture, clips, dictation and paste-last, and pick the hold-to-talk key.
Is it free?
Yes. Capipaste is MIT licensed and the source is on GitHub.
Privacy
Does my voice leave my Mac?
No. Every model runs locally on the Neural Engine. The only network traffic is the one-time download of a model you choose from the menu bar.
Are my screenshots uploaded anywhere?
No. They stay on your Mac in
~/Pictures/Capipaste and on your clipboard until you paste them somewhere yourself.Does tidying send my note anywhere?
No. Tidy uses Apple's on-device model when Apple Intelligence is on, or Qwen 3.5 2B running on your Mac if you download it in Settings. Turn Tidy off and your words are pasted exactly as transcribed.
Why does it need Screen Recording permission?
macOS requires it for any app that captures the screen. Capipaste only captures when you press ⌘⇧S and drag.
Pasting
Why does the terminal get a file path instead of the image?
Claude Code attaches an image from the clipboard and drops any text next to it. So when you capture from a terminal, Capipaste copies your note with
[screenshot: /path.png], and the agent opens the file itself.Which terminals count?
cmux, Ghostty, Terminal, iTerm2, Warp, WezTerm, kitty, Alacritty, Terax, Rio and Hyper. Capipaste checks which app was in front when you pressed the shortcut.
What do chat apps get?
The annotated PNG and your note together. Codex pastes both. Some chat boxes keep only the image, and the saved file is always there if you need it.
What's the Context line in my note?
The app you captured from, its window title and, in Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave or Edge, the page URL. macOS asks once per browser before Capipaste can read the address. Turn it off in Settings › General.
Can I paste an old capture again?
Every note is saved next to its PNG. The menu bar lists recent captures (click to copy again), and ⌃⌘V pastes the last one wherever you are.
Where does focus go after I press Return?
Back to the app you captured from, so ⌘V lands right away.
Speech
Which speech model should I pick?
Nemotron 3.5 Streaming if you want words to appear as you speak. Parakeet 110M for the smallest, fastest English model. Cohere Transcribe for the best accuracy on longer notes. Apple Speech works with no download at all.
Can I type instead of talk?
Yes. Click the note and type. Listening stops the moment you type, so dictation never overwrites your edits.
What if it mishears me?
Edit the text before pressing Return. If a transcript fails outright, Capipaste retries once, then keeps the card open and asks you to say it again.
What does Tidy do?
It rewrites what you said as one clear instruction: filler and false starts go, and when you correct yourself only the correction stays. A rewrite that drops a number or runs longer than you spoke is thrown away and your own words are used.
How do I teach it my project's words?
Settings › Speech › Vocabulary: one word per line (
useEffect, Supabase), or super base = Supabase to fix a repeat mishearing. Names in your screenshot, like PricingCards, are picked up for that capture automatically. Can I dictate without taking a screenshot?
Hold right ⌘. A small bar appears with the words as they come, and when you let go the text is on your clipboard and pasted where you were typing. Pick a different key, or turn it off, in Settings.
Can I use a different microphone?
Pick any input from the Microphone list in the menu bar: the built-in mic, a USB mic or AirPods.
Capture & drawing
How do I capture a whole window?
After ⌘⇧S, press Space to switch the picker to window mode, then click the window.
How do I erase part of a line?
Press E and drag over it. The eraser removes only what's under its circle. ⌘Z undoes a whole drag.
Can I hide passwords or patient details?
Press X and drag a box over them. The area is pixelated into the saved image, so the original pixels never reach the clipboard.
Can I send more than one screenshot?
Yes. With the card open, press ⌘⇧S again and pick another region. Thumbnails let you switch between shots and mark each one, and everything pastes together with one note.
Can I record a clip?
⌃⌘S opens the macOS video picker. Drag a region, press Record, and stop from the menu bar (30 seconds at most). The first frame opens in the card; the note links the video and three frames from later in the clip.
Can I zoom in on small text?
Pinch on the trackpad or use ⌘+ and ⌘−. Two-finger scroll pans, ⌘0 resets. Anything you draw while zoomed lands in the right spot on the saved image.
Where do my screenshots go?
Into
~/Pictures/Capipaste, with your drawings flattened in at full resolution and the note saved beside each one. Open the folder from the menu bar.
